A networking device that is a combination of an access point and a router. These devices are usually used in private homes where client PCs can be anywhere in the house (and thus use WiFi to connect), and the network is a broadband connection provided by an ISP.

A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router but also includes the functions of a wireless access point. It is commonly used to allow access to the Internet or a computer network without the need for a cabled connection.

Wireless routers are actually routers with Ethernet plus wireless access points so that they have both wired and/or wireless at the same time.

A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information.

This is an external modem that connects to the PC via USB. There is a USB cable used between the PC and the modem.

IT WORKS! Solar powered wireless internet in the wilds of Kenya!

Two years of planning, one year of field trials, six months of rigorous testing, and this photo was taken a couple of minutes after we used a Safaricom SIM card inside an unlocked Rogers USB/Modem, plugged in to a Cradlepoint PHS300 rechargeable wireless internet router and we have sent the internet to an OLPC XO laptop charging on a PV Master 10W solar panel. The entire set-up is less than USD$500 and, for a class, you would only need one Safaricom/Rogers/Cradlepoint configuration. The solar-panel/XO configuration could be duplicated for about USD$200.

Most importantly, this entire initiative was student researched and implemented. From left to right:

To get the internet to the XO's, we pull a cellphone signal to a Safaricom SIM card that can be purchased in Meru. We put that SIM card into an unlocked Rogers USB-stick modem and put the Rogers stick into a Cradlepoint wireless router that can accommodate a USB modem. The Cradlepoint is the key link here in that it enables us to send the EDGE cell signal across a wireless network to each XO!
